Every year around this time our excitement over mobile filmmaking is kicked up a few notches. The last weekend in April is when we host our annual event celebrating the mobile film industry around the world in “America’s Finest City” San Diego, California. The official International Mobile Film Festival #MFF2018SanDiego takes place April 28 & 29 at the Marina Village Conference Center.
Last year’s #MFF2017SanDiego included filmmakers who traveled to our film festival from Chile, Germany, Canada and Australia. They were a part of an international community of filmmakers from all over the world who are shooting their films with mobile phones. Networking and making new friends, sharing selfies with each other and connecting on social media was only one part of the event. They were all part of a Q&A panel discussion about everything smartphone filmmaking, including the potentials, the future and the creativity. Many stories told and shared by the filmmakers themselves.
The films, which screened during the festival, were entertaining, informative, inspiring, educational and we even had a session for “Freaky Films.” But it was the friends and conversations between the filmmakers that made the experience memorable. They shared insights and tips with each other and were enthused for the privilege to trade how they made their films with each other. Building trust is best done in person.
The red carpet experience was exceptional as it always is, with filmmakers being photographed by photographers, interviewed by our friends at Hall H Show and escorted by members of the local San Diego group Star Wars Steampunk Universe.
Our film festival is not only for filmmakers to participate. Our festival attendees don’t just come to watch films and sit through the Q&A and other presentations and Awards Ceremony. All attendees are encouraged to be a part of the celebration because we focus on the fact that everyone has a phone or access to one. We realize that because of that, people are easily inspired to want to participate as filmmakers the following year or at least to begin to play with the idea of telling stories through film using the camera they tuck in their pockets and purses. Anyone from young to old alike has the power to share stories by making films. So we encourage everyone to be a part of the event. To celebrate not just for the filmmakers but with the filmmakers.
Who knows, it could be you on the red carpet next year and it could be your film that screens on a big screen during an international event and hey, you just may become the next famed global mobile filmmaker! Join us in San Diego and become part of a global community.
If you are a cosplayer or have a cosplayer in the family, you may want to come and get more information about the new category for Cosplayers which will inaugurate in #MFF2019SanDiego.
